In Falsus Controller Support and Steam Deck: What Works
Does In Falsus support controllers? No official gamepad support yet — here are the Steam Input workaround, Steam Deck viability notes, and community controller projects.
Two questions keep cycling through the In Falsus Steam community: can you play with a controller, and does it run on Steam Deck? Here is the state of things, based on what players have reported and tested.
Official controller support: not yet
As of the current build, In Falsus has no official controller support. The game is designed around keyboard input for its rhythm lanes plus mouse or keys for the Field (card-battler) phase, and the settings do not offer native gamepad bindings. This may change — the game is still ahead of its full September 2026 release — but for now, a pad alone will not get you through a song.
If controller play matters to you, saying so in the Steam discussions genuinely helps: developers triage by demand, and the existing controller threads are the visible tally.
The Steam Input workaround
What does work today is Steam Input, Steam's built-in layer that maps gamepad buttons to keyboard and mouse actions. Players use this for games without native support all the time:
- In your Steam library, select In Falsus and open the controller layout (controller icon → edit layout). Enable Steam Input if prompted.
- Map the lane keys to buttons that suit rhythm play — face buttons and D-pad are the usual choices, bumpers for the outer lanes.
- Map a stick or the right trackpad to mouse movement for the Field phase, with a click action for selection.
- Save the layout, and consider publishing it to the community so other players can find it.
Honest caveat: buttons are not key switches. Latency and feel are a step down from a decent keyboard, and on dense charts you will notice. For casual play and lower difficulties it is entirely serviceable; for pushing high-level clears, keyboard remains the community-recommended input — see our keybinds guide for why (ghosting and rollover matter more than most players expect).
Steam Deck: mostly viable, with caveats
The Deck is the natural home for this workaround, and the ingredients are favorable:
- Proton: In Falsus is a Windows title, so on Deck it runs through Proton. There is no community consensus yet on a specific Proton version — if the default gives you trouble, try the latest Proton Experimental or a recent stable release from the game's Properties → Compatibility menu.
- Performance: this is a lightweight 2D rhythm game, far from demanding. Players' expectations — and the genre's track record on Deck — suggest it should hold a stable frame rate comfortably. A stable frame rate matters more than a high one for timing accuracy; a locked 60 fps with the Deck's frame limiter is a sensible target.
- Input: the Deck's built-in controls feed through Steam Input automatically, so the mapping approach above applies directly. The back grip buttons are excellent candidates for extra lane keys.
- Text legibility: one thing to watch — In Falsus has story and card text designed for desktop monitors. On the Deck's 800p screen, smaller text can get cramped in handheld mode. It is readable, but docked play or holding the Deck close helps. Check this early if text-heavy sections matter to you.
- Audio latency: rhythm games live and die by audio sync. Bluetooth audio on the Deck adds significant delay; use wired or the built-in speakers, and run the in-game offset calibration on the Deck specifically — calibration does not transfer between devices.
Community controller projects
Rhythm-game communities have a long tradition of custom controllers — DIY keyboards, hitbox-style boxes, and dedicated controllers built around a handful of high-quality switches. Community projects for lane-based games generally connect as standard USB keyboards or gamepads, which means the keyboard-emulation approach works with In Falsus's existing keybind system: anything that sends key presses can be bound in the controls settings. If you build or buy one, map its switches to your in-game lane keys and it should just work — no special driver layer needed on the game's side.
